Intensity

On the first square the intensity of the center color is lessened because the color around is dark. On the second square, the intensity of the center square is heightened because the color around it is bright. On the third square on the bottom left, the intensity is heightened as well because the surrounding color is bright. Lastly, on the last square, the intensity is greatly lessened because the two colors are similar.

The name of the artist who created this work is Jean-Michel Basquiat who is a somewhat abstract artist and the name is this piece is “Dos Cabezas.” This art was created in the 1980s around the time that AIDS first started being noticed in America. The two main objects in this painting are Jean-Michel’s head and Andy Warhol’s head as well as his hand. When I first look at the work I notice the two different faces. I see yellow, green, orange and black which I would describe as Earth tones. Shapes shown are circular shapes and rectangles in the background and these shapes have mostly uneven and odd edges to them. There are many lines going vertically down the painting. You can’t really see the time of day in this painting. The overall visual effect of this painting is to show how two people who are completely can be the best of friends. Basquiat used colors in different and random ways throughout this painting in the faces and background. The colors add add a calm tone to the work and the shapes add a more awkward feeling. Lines are used as connectors from one end of the painting to the other to connect is a whole work of art and the texture actually makes this work more personal. Lighting wasn’t really shown in this work as important because everything is all one tone. The artists design tools were used to exhibit his signature look as shown in all of his paintings. I think the artists statement was that two completely different people can grown to be the best of friends. this relates to me because my best friend is actually almost the exact opposite of me. When looking at this work I have a puzzled feeling. I think the split of colors between the two heads show the difference in personalities. I think the artist chose to work in this manner because it’s how he personally felt, and he created this work for the public I think because people would always wonder how and why Basquiat and Warhol were friends. This work in general conveys a message that many can relate to and has a general and easily relatable meaning. This work conveys a message that could have personal o sentimental value for people, especially now since both artists are dead. I think this is an amazing piece of art because it appears very personal and has a very unique style.

Under The Sea Description

leave a comment »

Alex’s Under the sea is a really good composition. It had smooth and somewhat calming colors. I like the volcano in the sea because it has a lot of colors and details with a mixture of different textures. Also, the octopus drawn is very interesting and draws the most of my attraction. The darker background makes the bright fish stand out along with the sea plants. The volcano is something I haven’t seen in any of the others which makes it that much more interesting.
